Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Red Dead Redemption

Every now and then I like to give a shout out to one of my writers over on Bright Hub when they do something particularly impressive.

Benjamin Sell has put together an incredibly set of guides for Red Dead Redemption. He has personally written a good 40+ mission guides, as well as a number of other general guides as well. If you play this game, then you definitely want to bookmark the main guide. If you don’t play the game, it is still worth checking out:

The game looks pretty awesome, and I love the setting. I think the Old West is a very under utilized gaming setting. From everything I have read, Rockstar did their typical impressive job with th e game. I don’t really agree with the game having an actual ACHIEVEMENT for murdering a nun by tying her to train tracks though.

This is moderately gaming related once you see the picture (below the fold). On Threshold today, we were trying to inspire people to vote for us on various game ranking sites. So as often happens, the discussion turned to “boobies.” I decided to google an inspirational picture, and so I googled “hottest naked chick on the internet” to see what would pop up. The result is *NOT* naked, so it is moderately SFW. But it is definitely suggestive, and it is somewhat gaming related.

So, when I upgrade a piece of equipment and stuff it into the dark recesses of my backpack to be discarded, I can help but think of exchanging a soiled diaper for a refreshingly clean one and tossing it into the diaper pail for later disposal.

This revelation opened the proverbial floodgates to a slew of similar discoveries. It turns out that leveling an MMO character is really quite similar to child rearing in many ways.

I wrote this article back in September of 2008: Nintendo Wii Motion Plus: What Is It, When Will It Be released, and When Will We Get It? The article has generated more traffic than anything else I’ve written on Bright Hub. It gets at least 1,000 views a month, sometimes 3,000+. Clearly a lot of people are interested in this thing, and yet it still doesn’t seem to be out. And I can’t find up to date information on it!

Is it out yet? Is it still coming out? Are you excited for it? What’s the deal here?

My wife wrote an excellent guide to healing a few weeks ago and I forgot to bring it up for discussion! She plays the healer type character on every MMO or RPG we play. Over the years, she has definitely become a highly skilled expert on the subject (and play) of healers.

What is the perfect “Geek Year” to be born in?

Raph Koster wrote an incredibly interesting and thought provoking blog post here: The perfect geek age?

Was being born in 1971 the perfect time to be born a geek?

It meant I got to see Star Wars in the theater, 13 times, at ages 6 and 7, exactly when it would overwhelm my sense of wonder.

I got an 8-bit computer at exactly the age when boys get obsessive about details, and I spent days PEEKing and POKEing and typing in listings from magazines and learning how computers actually worked.

It meant at least half the new games I played were actually new ideas.

And yet I got to play real pinball machines.

In real arcades.

New Wave science fiction was the used paperbacks laying around, and I got to read cyberpunk and steampunk as they were invented, and see SF when fandom was not yet a media circus.

I got to play D&D from as close to the beginning as most anyone.

And feel like I had inside baseball knowledge during the D&D scene in E.T., which the other folks in the theater didn’t get.

I was there for when the X-Men were new and fresh

I got to high school when PCs were becoming ubiquitous.

I got to college when Macs were on Apple campuses, and actually useful.

And when you had no choice but to use libraries for research, so I actually learned what real research is.

And I was too young to feel cynical about Dead Poets Society.

I got onto the Internet after it was tiny, but before it was mass market. So I got to see and use most of the tools and software that were key to its evolution, as they were used, then replaced, then discarded. Pine, gopher, Usenet, Mozilla…

I read Sandman when the issues first came out.

I got into the games business before it was mass media, but got to ride the wave.

…and also got to see the Web unfold…

…and got Wikipedia and Google just in time for when I didn’t need to use libraries anymore…

…and see some of the science fiction coming true.
