Runes of Magic – Free to play WoW-like MMO?

I have been hearing a lot about this game lately. When you look at the screenshots, you almost think you are looking at WoW. So they are definitely targeting WoW players with the look and feel. I have not tried the game out, but I did download it. I just haven’t had time to give it a shot. Have any of you readers tried it? If so, what do you think?

I have two Bright Hub writers that are really into it and are cranking out the articles. Here are a few of them:

Looks interesting. The two areas I’d be most curious about are the pvp system, and how their pay for perks works(assuming they have one).

  • I think they have a currency (diamonds) that you then use to buy stuff – items, temporary buffs, etc.

How about that UI? It LOOKS like its WoW. Kinda sneaky there.

The UI definitely looks like WoW. I don’t consider that a bad thing, for the most part. Only problem I have with WoW’s basic UI is the placement of the target and player frames.

After a bit of investigation, I’m thinking about giving the game a shot. Apparently the “diamonds” you mentioned can actually be traded between players on the auction house and such. That would seem to make it possible to avoid spending money to get them, assuming you’re good at MMO economics. Given I had 650+ gold in WoW on my first character by the time I was level 40, I’m interested in giving this a shot to see if I can successfully work a pay for perks game without ever actually paying for a perk.

  • Sounds good Outsider. Please report back with results!

  • Saylah over at Mystic Worlds has some good articles on RoM. I’ve been meaning to check it out, but with my ever-increasing burnout, it has come at a bad time. Still, the diamond scheme bears a superficial resemblance to Puzzle Pirates’ dual currency, which I’m a huge fan of, so I’m keeping an eye on the game, at least.

I installed it and played a little bit last night. It’s definitely very WoW like. Many of the first quests are the obligatory “bring me 10 wolf tails” variety, where apparently only about 50% of the wolf population has tails. I haven’t yet decided if this is enough to put me off playing it or not. I’m -really- tired of that type of quest, and I don’t understand why it’s so common. Instead of telling me to bring 10 of a 50% drop, just tell me to bring 20 of a 100% drop.

Well, having installed and played this game for the past two days, I have to say it does a pretty good imitation of a “free” version of WoW, with pay-for-perks. I’ve not played WoW in a long time so I’ve only got WoW (when it first came out) to compare to. RoM has a task system where every task master gives out Daily/General tasks that grant both xp and coin rewards, but RoM has a cap so that you can only turn in so many of those tasks a day.

I like that, but I still hate hate HATE having to grind quests over and over again to level, especially when those quests involve that you run from one city to another to try and find some random NPC to talk to, and then run all the way back.

I’m currently playing a Scout/Priest… which I think may be the DUMBEST most USELESS combination ever.

  • Here I go again… re: quest grinding:

Quest grind? Well, that’s pretty much all you have to tell me and I’m out. I am absolutely sick to death of quest grinding. I’ll take mob grinding any day of the week over quest grinding. I enjoy doing a few quests here and there, but only the really good ones that have a lot of time, effort, and creativity put into the story.
