Google and Facebook Advertising

Has anyone here ever used Google or Facebook advertising – preferably for a game, but for anything really? If so, what were your experiences? Did it work well? Any tips for getting the most out of it?

  • Hello

I’ve used both Google AdWords and Facebook ads to advertise my website game. Since my game is totally free, I didn’t really “try” that hard, I did it more as an experiment, to see how each one worked.
I had a limit of $20/day for both of them, and only ran them for maybe 4 or 5 days.

Both of the ‘reporting’ tools were good, although Google’s were slightly better in my opinion.

I feel that Google performed better for me, but I think how well either performs is highly based on not only the ad you create, but how you target it. Facebook has some extensive controls on who you target.
Facebook was much more expensive in general as well.

I’d suggest trying both, at the same time, if you have the budget for it.
Then you can directly compare the results and the bang for your buck.

Just second hand, but I’ve read from one guy’s blog about how important Adsense was to his business.. I don’t think it was Jeff Vogel – probably the Pretty Good Solitaire guy. Advertising really can’t be understated – when Pepsi and Coca-Cola have to run ads just to keep profits up, well, what hope is there for the rest of us?

Bid low and try it out – you’ll only lose as much as much as you decide to.

  • I’ve done tons and tons of adsense advertising for my browser-based games. Top tip is to try both search and content network and both text and image ads. You have to setup the goal tracking so you can measure your cost per registration and also your ROI in terms of paying customers by the source website on the content network. The difference will literally be 10x if you compare the ROI from the content network ads that appear on flash sites vs. the ones that appear on other browser-based game sites. Also, since your graphics are of such high quality (which I’m going to assume means your team will be able to generate very high quality ads with higher CTR), then you should also consider some very low-cost CPM networks like adbrite. But, the further away from google you go, the more click fraud you will run into and so the more hands-on you’ll have to be to test and weed out the non-performers.

  • Somehow I missed these comments back when I posted this.

Thanks for the great feedback! I will definitely keep it in mind when we do our next ad push.
