To leave combat you must now use the FLEE command. It currently takes 10 seconds to flee from combat. So if you think you will need to flee, you better decide early. This 10 second amount may be slightly increased or decreased depending on testing.
Fleeing is something that is done in a bit of a panic, so you do not get to choose the direction.
In the future, there will be skills that enhance the flee command in various ways. For example:
Fleeing faster
Attempting to choose the direction you will flee.
Dragging your party along with you when you flee.
